Find counsel by practice area
Every practice area is curated by an editorial team that reviews scope, sub-specialisms and the regulator behind each profile.
Three legal systems. One trustworthy place to look.
The UK has three distinct legal jurisdictions, each with its own regulator and admission rules. Browse them below — or search by city or postcode.
~140,000 practising solicitors. The Law Society of England and Wales is the representative body; the SRA the regulator.
~12,000 practising solicitors and ~470 advocates. Scots law is a distinct legal system.
~3,000 practising solicitors and ~700 barristers under the Bar of Northern Ireland.
A directory that earns its place.
Tell us the matter and the place. We surface solicitors by practice area, jurisdiction, city or postcode — including direct-access barristers.
Every profile shows the regulator (SRA, BSB, LSS, LSNI) plus practising-certificate status and PII insurance details.
See fee structures up-front — fixed fee, hourly, CFA or legal aid — and contact the solicitor directly. No referral fee skimmed off the top.
A different kind of legal directory.
We re-check practising certificates against the SRA, BSB, LSS and LSNI registers every month. No vanity badges.
Hourly rates, fixed fees, CFA "no win no fee" — and whether VAT is charged. All shown before you make contact.
Post a question to the right practice area and a verified solicitor can respond — at no cost to you.
Plain-English explainers of divorce, conveyancing, probate, immigration and more — written and checked by practising solicitors.
Questions worth asking.
Is SolicitorsHub free for clients?+
Yes. Searching the directory, reading profiles, asking a free Q&A and contacting solicitors are all free for the public. Solicitors pay for a placement; clients never do.
Are the solicitors actually regulated?+
Every profile we list is cross-checked against its regulator — SRA for E&W solicitors, BSB for E&W barristers, LSS / Faculty of Advocates for Scotland, LSNI / Bar of NI for Northern Ireland — and the practising-certificate status is re-checked monthly.
What is the difference between a solicitor and a barrister?+
In E&W, solicitors typically advise clients directly and instruct barristers when court advocacy is required. Since 2004 many barristers also accept direct-access work from the public. Scotland has solicitors and advocates; Northern Ireland has solicitors and barristers. We list all three.
How do I check a solicitor before I instruct them?+
Every profile shows the regulator reference (e.g. SRA ID), practising-certificate status, professional-indemnity insurance, education and any awards. You can also use the regulator’s own public register, linked from each profile.
Do you take a cut of the solicitor’s fee?+
No. Solicitors pay a flat monthly placement fee — never a per-lead commission. SRA Code of Conduct rule 5.1 (introducer arrangements) is the reason: we don’t want any commercial reason for a solicitor to put the directory’s interests above the client’s.
